Keep your feet warm while skiing

You lose a lot of body heat through your hands and feet. Your feet will cool down faster especially if they’re trapped in your ski or snowboard boots, as they have less room to move. But you’ll last much longer on the slopes if you wrap them up properly and don’t give perspiration a chance at the same time (because it cools your feet down even more). Our tips will help you reduce the risk of ice-cold toes:

 

  • A winter sock is not a ski sock: ski socks are longer than hiking socks, so they can retain body heat from your lower legs. Ski socks insulate your feet, are more breathable, and eliminate moisture. 
  • Foot warmers: put a foot warmer in your shoe or boot to provide your feet with a mini heater. You can also opt for insoles with integrated foot warmers. 
  • Take care of your feet: wash them at least once a day on winter sports holidays and sprinkle some special foot powder between your toes.
  • The right material: a material like merino wool not only regulates the temperature of your feet but is also antibacterial. So you don’t have to worry about the cold or unpleasant odours. 

How to recognise a good ski sock

A good pair of ski socks increases the comfort in your ski boots by a factor of 100. What you need to look out for:

  • A ski sock is not a snowboard sock. Snowboarders put stress on their feet very differently, so the pressure and protection points are in different places.
  • Always choose the right size. Socks that are too tight are not comfortable; socks that are too big will bunch up, which causes chafing and blisters. 
  • The shaft length and fit are also important. It is best to try on socks when wearing your own boots. Make sure the heel area fits nicely over your heel and that the shaft area is higher than your boots. 
  • Your socks shouldn’t be too thick either. Thick on your shin, your heel, and the top of your foot is good because you need extra protection there. But it is just as important for your socks to be thin in other places so that they ventilate sufficiently.

Ski socks should be comfortable, just like any other pair of socks. When you have them on, you should not feel any ridges or pinching anywhere. A good pair of socks should also be long enough, preferably slightly longer than the shaft of your ski boot. Your shoe scrapes across your lower leg and the last thing you want are scraped shins.

 

When making your choice, also make sure the socks are not too thick. Thick on your shin, your heel and the top of your foot is good because you need protection there from the chafing and pressure of your shoe. But in other places, it is just as important for your socks to be thin so that they ventilate sufficiently.

 

Last but not least: the size. Always choose the right size socks! Socks that are too tight don’t sit well; socks that are too big bunch up and will cause chafing and blisters. 

If you go snowboarding, you don’t need ski socks but actual snowboard socks. Snowboarders stress their feet very differently from skiers. So the pressure and protection points with thicker fabric on ski socks are in different places. Choose the right sock for the right winter sport!
