Waterfilters

In our part of the world we can simply drink as much clean, potable water as we want, straight from the tap. But many countries do not have that luxury. Are you travelling to a hot or tropical region, where proper hydration is vital? If so, chances are that the water contains viruses, bacteria, or dirt. And especially when heading out into nature, it is best to think twice before drinking from any water source you may come across. A good water filter is the best option for these kinds of adventures. With a pump, UV light or gravity, you can easily transform contaminated water into a safe thirst quencher. Added benefit: you save on plastic bottles during your holiday as well as weight in your hiking rucksack!

How does a water filter work?

It depends on the kind of filter you choose. Do you just want to filter dirt and harmful microorganisms from the water, or also tackle chemical pollution? You can choose between:

  • An active carbon filter: it removes chemical contaminants such as pesticides from the water by binding chemicals to it. It’s important to know that the effectiveness of the active carbon expires after filtering 200 litres of water or six months of use. The filter itself will still work.
  • A physical filter: it pushes water through a membrane with very fine pores using a pump, built-in filter cap or gravity. It removes all parasites and most bacteria and viruses. The filter element consists of either a ceramic part or a hollow fibre membrane.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about water filters

To find the water filter that is best for quenching your thirst, you just have to choose between the following:

  • Filter strength: what type of microorganisms do you want to filter from your water? The smaller the holes in your filter's membrane, the more critters it removes.
  • System: do you want the filter to work using a pump, gravity or UV light? For example, one method requires you to make a bit more effort, the other requires more maintenance.
  • Type of filter: do you prefer an active carbon filter or a physical filter?
  • Preferences: which extras are important to you? Do you want a lightweight filter system? Are you looking for a system that will last as long as possible or do you want to be able to filter heavily polluted water?

There are several reasons why you should take a water filter with you on your travels. The first, most obvious one, of course, is that when you’re abroad, you don't always have access to clean, safe water. The risk of infection due to bacteria or viruses in drinking water is serious, especially in hot and/or tropical countries. What’s more, staying properly hydrated is essential in these parts of the world.

The second reason is that you may want your hiking rucksack to be as light as possible. A full water bag or one or more drinking bottles can quickly add 2 kg to your pack. If you take a water filter, you don’t have to lug as much water around because you can filter water on the go (provided you check in advance which water points you will come across along the way).

The third reason is that by using a water filter, you save on a lot of plastic bottles in countries where you can’t drink tap water. You’re not only protecting yourself, but also the environment!

That depends entirely on the type of filter you choose. An active carbon filter’s effectiveness expires, for example, after filtering 200 litres of water, or six months of use. The filter itself will still work. During your search for the right water filter, check the product information on our website!
