Carry-On

Are you a real city tripper or do you just like to pack light and compact for your trip? Then carry-on luggage is the way to go. Those who want to be mobile and adventurous usually opt for a backpack. Those who mainly want their holidays to run smoothly are better off with a wheeled hand luggage suitcase. A trolley is also usually a little more organised than a backpack. It all depends on your needs! Just be careful not to exceed the maximum dimensions if you want to travel by plane, so you can keep your precious belongings close to you.

Size matters: all about dimensions

The maximum dimensions for carry-on luggage depend on the airline you’re flying with. Usually, your suitcase, trolley or backpack can be 36 cm high, 45 cm wide, and 25 cm deep. We’ve listed the specific requirements of a few major airlines for you, but please note that these can always change! So double-check it before you leave, just to be sure.

  • Ryanair: 42 cm x 20 cm x 30 cm
  • TUI Fly: 55 cm x 20 cm x 40 cm
  • Corendon: 55 cm x 25 cm x 40 cm
  • Brussels Airlines: 55 cm x 23 cm x 40 cm

A backpack as carry-on luggage

Most people think of a trolley when they think of hand luggage. But don’t underestimate the pros of a backpack! You can just swing a backpack on your shoulders and you’re off. Thanks to handy (side) pockets, a bottle of water, your boarding pass, and your wallet are always within reach. Plus, handy packing cubes allow you to organise your bag as orderly as any trolley. Don’t want to give pickpockets a chance? Then use your rain cover to better protect your backpack, or use a lock to secure the zips.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about hand luggage

Hand luggage is the baggage you are allowed to take with you on the plane i.e., the baggage you don’t have to check in at the counter. You only need do that with checked baggage. Backpacks, travel bags, trolleys, laptop bags or camera bags: as long as they fit within the maximum dimensions and do not contain prohibited items (check the website of your airline), they can be taken on the plane as hand luggage!

What you can bring depends on the airline with which you are flying. Be sure to check the website before you leave. In principle, you can take everything with you, except:

  • Pointed or sharp objects such as a nail file, nail scissors or razor blade
  • Blunt objects such as a baseball bat
  • Highly flammable substances or items such as a cigarette lighter
  • Chemicals and toxic substances
  • Firearms

As far as liquids are concerned, you are usually allowed to take up to a maximum of 100 ml of each item on board. Store them all in a transparent bag to ensure you can get through the security check quickly. Anything you buy in the tax-free zone can also be taken on board in your hand luggage. There are some items that must be taken on board as hand luggage and are not allowed in your checked baggage, these include electronic devices with lithium batteries (laptop, mobile phone, tablet).

The weight of your hand luggage depends on the airline with which you are flying. Be sure to check the website before you leave. For Brussels Airlines, your travel bag or trolley must not exceed 12 kg (which is quite generous compared to other airlines such as Ryanair and Transavia who have a maximum weight of 10 kg). You can often also take an additional item such as a handbag or laptop bag.
