From a day out to trekking

Whatever your plans are, there’s sure to be a perfect backpack for them. For example, it doesn’t make any sense to commute to work with a trekking backpack. And it makes even less sense to go trekking with a cycling backpack. FAQ – Frequently asked questions about backpacks

Adjusting your backpack properly is important for both your hips and shoulders. If you adjust your backpack so that it rests on your hips, you can relieve your shoulders. Therefore, first of all, distribute the weight across your entire back.   

  • Before putting on your backpack, loosen all the straps.  
  • Adjust the hip belt: this is different for women than for men as women’s hip bones stick out a bit further.  
  • A good trick to adjust your hip belt is to put your hand on the belt. If you can place your thumb on the top of your pelvis, you’re fine!  
  • Adjust the shoulder straps: tighten the lower straps until the backpack is secure enough.  
  • Attach the chest strap: if you find that this strap is too low, you will probably have trouble breathing. The ideal height for the chest strap is between your collarbone and sternum.  

It all depends on exactly what you are going to do: a city trip or a multi-day trek, for example. The type of activity determines the type of backpack and its size. Be sure to walk around a bit with the backpack on in the shop. That way, you can immediately tell whether it feels comfortable or not. 

The back length depends on how easy or heavy your trip will be. The centre of gravity should be close to your back and at shoulder height on easy trips. If you are more likely to go on a slightly heavier trek, we recommend to moving the centre of gravity lower. That way, you maintain a better balance.

The size of your backpack depends on what you are going to do and what you are taking with you. Are you taking a four-day hut tour through the mountains? Then a backpack of around 35 litres will suffice. Are you heading into the wilderness for an extended period and taking camping gear with you? Then opt for a 60-litre backpack. Taking a simple day trip across the heathlands? Then a 20-litre backpack will suffice. Plenty of room for water and snacks!

 

If you notice that your backpack is still too big when you leave, you can easily adjust it by pulling the straps tighter.

The size of a school backpack depends entirely on the student.  If your little one is taking their very first steps in education in preschool and kindergarten, make sure you have a backpack of no more than 10 litres, so your little one can carry it easily on their own. In primary school, you will be fine with a backpack of up to 15 litres, with enough space for a healthy lunch, a workbook, and your school agenda. And if you know secondary school like the back of your hand: buy a 15- to 20-litre backpack so you have enough room for all your snacks, A4 folders, textbooks, and your water bottle. The student makes the backpack!
