Whether it is an MTB shoe or a racing shoe, a cycling shoe should first and foremost be comfortable. But it’s also important that there’s no friction, and what if you’re looking for a durable model? A few tips:
Of course, the biggest advantage of cycling shoes is that you can clip your feet to your pedals. Because you are strapped in, the power you generate as you pedal is better transferred to your pedals. That way, you lose less energy and cycle a lot more efficiently. That means more speed for the same effort.
Another advantage is that you have more control over your bike. If you take a slip on the tarmac and want to keep your bike upright, or if you want to throw the rear wheel of your mountain bike into the verge just right, it works much better with a pair of shoes attached to your pedals!
If you want to make the most of the power you put on your pedals, it is important that your cycling shoes fit perfectly. Choose a pair that fits well, but is also not too tight. When it’s hot or when you’re expending energy for a long time, your feet will expand. A slightly wider shoe also comes in handy in winter, as that extra bit of space provides a small buffer against the cold.
Can’t choose between the various brands? Then keep in mind that Italian brands are generally tighter than German brands, for example. So a good fit is essential!
