Different types of hammocks
Lounge hammock, travel hammock, trekking hammock… There are so many different types to choose from, but which one is best for you? Hang in there, we’ve listed all the hammocks and their main features for you:
- Lounge hammock: the colourful kind you often see in gardens and parks. You attach the cords/ties of this hammock around the nearest two poles or trees. And then it’s time to chill.
- Travel hammock: these lightweight hammocks are made entirely of parachute fabric. This makes them lightweight and compact, but still super sturdy. Ideal for taking on holiday.
- Trekking hammock: some adventurers like to trek as light as possible, and prefer to leave the tent and sleeping mat at home. You’ll feel even closer to nature in a hammock with a mosquito net, all the while being protected from critters.
- Hammock with a stand: don’t have any trees or poles nearby, or just want to spruce up your terrace with a stylish alternative to a lounge sofa? Then opt for a hammock with a stand. Snack and swing!
For trekkers: hammock versus tent
When you think of travelling and sleeping in nature, you immediately think of a tent in your backpack. But did you know that this is often not necessary? On some trails, it’s enough to bring just a hammock and leave everything else at home. It’s especially recommended in warmer areas since there is ventilation along the bottom and top. A few more advantages:
- You sleep in a very natural position in a hammock, which is better for your back.
- You don’t need a flat surface, just two trees or poles.
- The mosquito net above you is transparent, so you can peacefully stargaze before drifting off to sleep.
- If you can’t find suitable trees or poles, you can still use your hammock as a tent by laying it on the ground. It’s an emergency solution, but it's better than nothing!
While a hammock really is a great alternative to a tent, there are some drawbacks to consider:
- If it is colder than -10°C degrees in the morning, you will need extra insulation. And that, in turn, means extra weight in your backpack.
- You’ll need a waterproof tarp in environments where it rains a lot. Again, extra weight.
- You can’t take your backpack with you in your hammock. You will have to leave it under the hammock, and thus 'outside'.
- Getting into your sleeping bag and finding a comfortable position can be a task because you keep sliding to the middle. But practice makes perfect!
FAQ – frequently asked questions about hammocks
- If you want to use your hammock mainly at home, choose a firmly, durable one made of coloured cotton.
- If you want to laze around at your destination, go for a light, compact one in parachute fabric.
- Would you prefer to exchange your tent for a hammock? Then look for adventure hammocks with integrated mosquito netting.
- Do you prefer a hanging chair for your terrace or in the children’s room? This is also a nice, relaxed option!
Most hammocks can be easily hung between two trees or affixed to a special hammock stand with the supplied accessories. You can also hang a hammock indoors or on your terrace by attaching it to a pole or wall ring. Did your hammock not come with suspension accessories included? You can always buy them separately.
You can calculate this by dividing the length of the available space by two. If your two trees are four metres apart, suspend the hammock at two metres. When hanging, also consider the elasticity of the fabric; parachute fabric will sag a little more than firmly cotton.
A single person version measures approximately 120 cm wide and is 200 cm long. A double hammock is at least 140 cm wide and over 220 cm long.
